Cai Kuan, courtesy name Wende, was from Pengcheng and served Wu. The chapters in which he appears are unknown; he does not feature in the novel.
Deeds
Zhang Cheng recognized Cai Kuan’s talent and promoted him when he was still young and obscure. Cai Kuan later became a distinguished statesman and rose to the post of Commandant of the Guards (as recorded in the histories).
The Wu Lu records that Cai Kuan held various posts inside and outside the court, earning renown in his day for his integrity. He later concurrently served as Director of the Secretariat while holding the post of Commandant of the Guards, and was enfeoffed as Marquis of Liu (as recorded in the histories).
